National Mentoring Month: Supporting Growth, Confidence & Inclusive Guidance

National Mentoring Month, celebrated every January, honors the mentors who offer guidance, encouragement, and steady support to help others grow. Mentorship isn’t symbolic it’s a real force that builds confidence, strengthens independence, and creates a sense of belonging.

For Joey’s Journeys, mentorship directly impacts how travelers of all abilities experience the world. When someone feels supported, they step into new environments with greater readiness, courage, and trust.

History & Purpose

National Mentoring Month was established in 2002 to highlight the transformative power of mentoring relationships whether in youth development, career guidance, or community support. It underscores a simple truth: people thrive when someone believes in them and helps guide their path.

National Recognition & Annual Campaigns

Each January includes national themes, storytelling campaigns, and community initiatives that invite more people to step into mentor roles. These efforts raise awareness about how guidance and encouragement can shape lives, change trajectories, and open new possibilities.

Why Mentorship Matters

Mentorship goes beyond structured programs it appears anytime one person helps another feel prepared, capable, and confident.

At Joey’s Journeys, mentorship plays a key role in:

  • Building emotional readiness and life skills
  • Helping travelers feel supported throughout new experiences
  • Giving families reassurance and shared guidance
  • Allowing volunteers and staff to naturally become mentors during trips

Mentorship strengthens community and transforms how travelers see themselves and the world.

A Personal Note on Mentorship

I served as a mentor for the INCubator.edu entrepreneurship program at Buffalo Grove High School, guiding students through how to build, test, and pitch business ideas. It was rewarding, challenging, and meaningful the kind of experience that stays with you long after the program ends.

I continue to stay connected by substitute teaching in the CTE (Career and Technology Education) Department at local high schools. It’s an opportunity to support future leaders, give back, and keep mentorship at the center of community involvement.

Mentorship only matters when it’s lived.

Signature Days in January

National Mentoring Month includes several key dates that highlight gratitude, storytelling, and connection:

  • I Am a Mentor Day – January 7
  • International Mentoring Day – January 17
  • Thank Your Mentor Day – January 25

These days inspire people to share stories, celebrate mentors, and recognize the relationships that shaped their lives and futures.

How Individuals Can Participate

You don’t need a title or program to be a mentor. Small acts of guidance can create lifelong impact.

Individuals can:

  • Mentor a youth, peer, or family member navigating disability or travel challenges
  • Share their inclusive travel experiences to support first-time travelers
  • Help a family joining Joey’s Journeys for the first time
  • Thank the mentors who helped them grow, adapt, and thrive

Impact begins with intention.

How Families Can Participate

Families often mentor through presence, encouragement, and shared experience. They can:

  • Join Joey’s Journeys community events
  • Offer informal guidance to new families planning inclusive travel
  • Encourage children to build relationships with supportive role models
  • Highlight mentors who made a difference throughout the year

Mentorship within families builds stronger connections and greater confidence.

How Organizations Can Participate

Schools, nonprofits, and travel partners can enhance the impact of mentorship by:

  • Creating or strengthening mentoring programs
  • Partnering with Joey’s Journeys to support inclusive travel
  • Encouraging staff to volunteer as mentors during trips
  • Hosting education sessions focused on disability inclusion and communication

Organizational mentorship helps build communities that are more supportive, more aware, and more inclusive.

Leadership, Mentoring & Inclusion

Mentorship is a defining trait of true leadership. Effective mentors create environments where people feel safe, supported, and valued. These values mirror Joey’s Journeys’ commitment to ensuring every traveler regardless of ability feels guided, empowered, and included.

Through mentorship, we build:

  • Confidence
  • Emotional growth
  • Belonging
  • Stronger support networks

Leadership and mentoring together create accessible, meaningful travel experiences.
