A Brief History of Native American Heritage Month
A. Origins of Native American Heritage Month
Native American Heritage Month traces its roots to 1915, when Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a Seneca Indian and museum director, helped establish “American Indian Day.”
Decades later, in 1990, President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution that expanded the celebration to a month-long observance officially recognizing November as National Native American Heritage Month.
