Disability Pride Month: A Celebration of Inclusion and Empowerment

Why Disability Pride Matters

As Executive Director of Joey’s Journeys, Disability Pride Month holds deep personal meaning. It represents everything we strive for—equity, access, visibility, and joy. It’s a reminder that inclusion is not a side note to life. It is the center of it.

Rooted in the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Disability Pride Month is about self-affirmation, community, and the rejection of shame. It’s about shifting the focus from what people with disabilities “can’t do” to the vibrant spectrum of what they are doing, every day.

What Is Disability Pride Month?

Disability Pride Month was first celebrated in 1990, the same year the ADA was signed into law. Since then, it has become a global movement celebrating identity, rejecting stigma, and demanding accessibility in every aspect of life.

Key symbols include:

  • The Disability Pride flag, representing the diversity of the disability community
  • Visibility and community celebrations
  • A call for advocacy, not pity

It’s a time for empowerment—for individuals, families, and allies to come together and say: We belong.

Spotlight on 2025 Events & Programs

This July, Joey’s Journeys is proud to host a special inclusive tour through our Travel with Joey’s Journeys program. It’s designed to be sensory-friendly, flexible, and joy-filled—exactly the kind of travel our community deserves.

We’re also highlighting events through our Inclusive Travel Partners network. Check out our coalition page to discover collaborations with accessible travel providers.

Real Stories of Pride & Exploration

Disability Pride is most powerful when it’s personal. Here’s what Olivia, a Joey’s Journeys traveler with autism, had to say:

“When I traveled with Joey’s Journeys, I felt included from the moment I arrived.”

We’ve also shared stories that show pride in action, including:

  • Types of Special Needs: A Guide
  • Siblings of Children with Special Needs
  • Nutrition Tips for Neurodiverse Kids
  • Special Needs Misconceptions

These stories aren’t just narratives—they’re tools for understanding, empathy, and pride.

How Joey’s Journeys Promotes Inclusive Travel

At the heart of our work is a commitment to accessible, empowering experiences for all families.

We do this through:

  • Custom Travel with Joey’s Journeys itineraries
  • Inclusive Travel Partners supporting cross-network accessibility
  • Ongoing education and advocacy via blogs, webinars, and parent workshops
  • Alignment with international standards like the UN CRPD (Article 9) for accessible tourism

When families feel prepared, supported, and welcomed, everything changes.
