When Joey was first diagnosed, I felt like the world slowed down. There were more questions than answers, more paperwork than peace, and more fear than hope. But there was also something else—an unshakable sense that our journey wasn’t over. It was just beginning.
As Executive Director of Joey’s Journeys, I often get asked: “What inspired all this?” The truth? It was Joey. Our family’s story isn’t about limitations. It’s about the joy, resilience, and growth that comes when we move through life with intention—and when we choose to share our path so others can find their way, too.

Early Challenges and Resilience
The early days were hard. At first, learning to navigate therapies, IEP meetings, insurance calls, and social stigmas—all while trying to just be a mom—was overwhelming.
Over time, we learned how to advocate, adapt, and reframe what “the future” looked like. Although milestones came at their own pace, they came. Ultimately, we found strength in every step.

Travel as a Catalyst for Independence
Our first family trip was both terrifying and transformative. Could Joey handle the sensory overload? Would we find accessible lodging? What if we faced stares or obstacles?
We faced them all—and we overcame them.
What worked? Planning ahead. Calling ahead. Finding places that didn’t just “accommodate” but welcomed us.
That trip changed everything. It wasn’t just about a new destination—it was about a new Joey. We saw confidence, curiosity, and independence bloom.

Founding Joey’s Journeys
Joey’s transformation inspired us to create something for other families like ours. That’s why we launched Joey’s Journeys—a community-driven platform to empower families navigating disability through accessible travel.

Travel plays a profound role in that process. When kids like Joey visit new places, they don’t just see new things—they see new versions of themselves.
